(PRWEB) February 27, 2006 -- The Institute Pasteur Korea (IPK) and Euroscreen s.a. today announced a partnership to perform screening of G protein coupled receptors using internalization assays. The development at the Institute Pasteur Korea of a visual-based High Throughput Screening platform offers unique opportunities for the identification of drug candidates activating receptor internalization while Euroscreen’s receptor cell lines and GPCR library compounds will provide the initial direction and components for this drug discovery collaboration.

This partnership takes thus advantage of both IPK expertise in the image analysis and HCS fields and Euroscreen competence in GPCR biology and Chemistry tools.

“We are delighted to be working with Euroscreen s.a. on this GPCR Drug Discovery project. This partnership highlights the increasing interest in visual-based screening technologies to identify more selective drug candidates. It validates the screening approach we develop at IPK” commented Dr. Thierry Christophe, Head of Screening Technologies and Pharmacology at Institute Pasteur Korea.

“Collaborating with one of the World’s leaders in the GPCR science sector signifies an important step in materialising IPK’s innovative approach. We are enthusiastic to have found a highly competent partner in Euroscreen, to take HCS screening to the next level.” added Dr. Ulf Nehrbass, Director and CEO of IPK.

“This should provide our companies with a rapid, joint opportunity to develop drug candidates which selectively cause the internalization of GPCRs for their therapeutic action in vivo,” said Dr. François Roman, the Head of Drug Development R&D at Euroscreen.

There Is Unknown Information On Mesothelioma Treatments

JustMeso Offers Information on Treatment Options

JustMeso.com offers a plethora of information on treatment options for mesothelioma.

(I-Newswire) - Mesothelioma, the deadly disease that has been at the forefront of global medical and legal research for the last decade, is becoming increasingly susceptible to advanced treatment options.  While the disease is not yet curable, if caught very early there are a wide range of rather divergent medical treatment options which have had substantial success in limiting the harmful effects of malignant mesothelioma.

While there are a number of treatment options available, often there is a great deal of unknown information regarding what the procedures available are and how they work.  To that end, JustMeso.com (  http://www.JustMeso.com  ) has provided comprehensive information about the disease, its causes, and now the treatment options available to those diagnosed at its website.

The site explains in great detail the many traditional and new treatments available to those diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, such as surgical solutions, radiation, and chemotherapy.  JustMeso.com breaks down each category into its component procedures as well as providing information on the extent of a procedure, its level of invasiveness, as well as an analysis of the costs and benefits of each specific procedure.  This analysis includes summaries of information on the effectiveness and the scope of the effectiveness of a particular treatment option.

Combined, the information compiled by JustMeso.com in their treatment options section ( http://www.justmeso.com/treatment/ ), provides those diagnosed as well as their loved ones with a comprehensive resource from which they can attain a deeper understanding of the diseases as well as assess either own situation in light of the present treatment options available.  This information can prove valuable insofar as it will give individuals an excellent overview of the options available to them.  Through this information, individuals affected by mesothelioma can make more educated decisions about their own situation as well as be better situated to provide support for others. Of course, none of the information on JustMeso should be taken as medical advice, and a person should always consult their physician before taking treatment.

New Mesothelioma Cancer Search Engine

Mesothelioma Search Engine To Consolidate Medical and Legal Information

New lung cancer search engine provides information on medical and legal web sites for those researching this asbestos-caused killer cancer

Minneapolis, MN (NTS) February 23, 2006 – On the one-year anniversary of the launch of their Vioxx Search EngineInternet consulting firm Nielsen Technical Services today announced the launch of their Mesothelioma Search Engine.

Niche search engines or vertical search engines have increased in popularity, but the time and expense of creating and maintaining a search engine for a highly vertical segment of an available search audience is generally not a good investment financially. When asked about the financial viability of such a site, owner Chris Nielsen said, “We have some interested parties that would like to be associated with us and are exploring those options, but will not compromise our values for the sake of making a buck. The massive amount of money the asbestos and mesothelioma lawyers are spending have resulted in a feeding frenzy which has spawned thousands of sites and millions of pages of fluff, trash, and recycled content. I admit our site is expected to carry ads at some point, but that is not the reason for creating the site.”

Nielsen was then asked the reason for creating such a site. “I just could not find a central source to go for information where sites were not bidding or competitively optimizing for position and search engine ranking. Search engines are fighting to maintain relevancy but they are having problems. Many ‘scraper sites’ are only looking to get visitors that will click on ads to reach real content. If you try a search for ‘mesothelioma’ it should be clear what the problem is.”

As with their Vioxx medical and legal search engine, Mesothelioma Search Engine will carry no paid search engine results or paid inclusion of sites. The site has a form for visitors to suggest sites. The list of sites included in the index is posted on the site and clearly shows mesothelioma site owners if their site has been included. It is also available for download, a feature not offered by other search engines.

The company is indexing selected sites for those looking for more information such as patients, researchers, families, doctors, pharmacists, students, and those in the legal profession. This site is offered as a public service for those looking for information related to medical and legal information on mesothelioma lung cancer, or asbestos lung cancer for which there is no cure and is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers or asbestos dust.

About Nielsen Technical Services
The company is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has been providing computer and software services since 1988. The Internet has transformed the company from a hardware services company into Internet consulting and specializes in search engine optimization.

Kennedy Statement On Asbestos Legislation Endorsed

Senator Edward Kennedy issued a key statement today regarding Bill S.852 the Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act of 2005. Kennedy's statements coincide with our previous opinion regarding the pending bill.
(I-Newswire) - Senator Edward Kennedy issued a key statement regarding Bill S.852 the Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act of 2005. Kennedy's statements coincide with our previous opinion regarding the pending bill.

The real crisis regarding asbestos exposure in the workplace is not potential litigation but the number of victims who contract the deadly disease Mesothelioma.

Supporters of the bill propose to set up a $140 billion dollar asbestos compensation fund, but it is doubtful if even an all out effort this week will bring the bill to a vote on the floor of the US Senate.

As Kennedy states victims suing the companies who exposed their loved ones to this disease did not create the costs. The costs, which include lost productivity, medical, care, along with payments to provide basic living needs for family members who died years before their time.

A shifting of financial burden to the victims and their families is, according to Kennedy unacceptable.

Kennedy recognizes the efforts by Senators Specter and Leahy who are in favor of passage of the bill. That said it has several fundamental flaws, which make it an unreasonable solution to the pending crisis.

Kennedy states our first obligation is to do no harm. Argument that there are certain inadequacies regarding how current asbestos litigation is handled should not be the major thrust toward passage of this bill.

Government intervention is the concern voiced across the nation by potential victims of this deadly disease. If the fund were to liquidate over time all potential damages would be in question. What rights would victims have in a legal setting to seek compensation from the offending companies?

Individuals concerned about their risks of legal passage of Bill S.852 can use the www.mesothelioma-attorney-case.com
Legal Information page ( http://www.mesothelioma-attorney-case.com/legalissues.html ) to better understand the ramifications of the legal act. Asbestos Trust Fund Opposed By Mesothelioma Medical Experts

Mesothelioma Medical Experts Oppose Asbestos Trust Fund, Saying FAIR Act Hurts More than Helps

NEW YORK, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Doctor-Patient Alliance for Responsible Asbestos Policy today repeated its call on the U.S. Senate to cure fatal flaws in the proposed Asbestos Trust Fund bill (SB 852).

Last July, the nationwide group of 34 doctors who treat mesothelioma patients urged the U.S. Senate to remove the "one-size-fits-all" cap on awards and install a due process hearing, at which patients could prove their special medical and financial hardship damages and have their award tailored accordingly. The claims review system would be modeled after the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund.

In addition, the Doctor-Patient Alliance asked for assurances that dying mesothelioma patients would be fairly compensated during their shortened life span. The detailed letter was sent to all 100 U.S. Senators.

"We are disappointed that our suggestions were ignored," said Dr. Harvey Pass, Chief of Thoracic Surgery at New York University Medical School. "This bill presented an historic opportunity to enact legitimate reforms that would directly benefit present and future meso patients. Regrettably, the bill actually hurts more than helps meso patients."

"The $1.1 million cap is insufficient to meet the medical, hospital, travel, lodging and other costs of mesothelioma patients who pursue the best treatments, which include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination of therapies," said Dr. Robert Cameron, Chief of Thoracic Surgery at UCLA Medical School. "The inflexible cap fails to address the ongoing medical costs of patients who survive long enough to outlive the median survival time but who remain disabled and unable to earn a living. The bill ends up discriminating against the early stage, usually younger, patients whose life- long medical costs are certain to exceed their award.

"Mesothelioma must be treated as a chronic disease that requires a lifetime of care and treatment," said Dr. Cameron. "The costs of staying alive will far surpass the bill's arbitrary cap. Worse, some patients may decide against expensive novel treatments to stockpile the meager 'compensation' for their family."

In addition, the Alliance argues that any awards should be made while the money can be effectively invested in life-extending cures. "I doubt very much that the new bureaucracy will be up and running within my life time," predicts Dr. Bret Williams, age 52, a two year meso survivor who has incurred over $600,000 in medical bills. "It will take at least two years for the new federal agency to start paying out claims, while the median survival for mesothelioma patients is about nine months."

Dr. Williams, who has resolved his third-party civil claim, noted that most states have laws that allow in extremis meso patients to obtain preferential trial settings. For example, in Colorado and California, courts are required to set hardship meso cases for trial within 120 days. "I don't buy the rhetoric that an untested, under funded and at this point non-existent federal agency will pay out fair compensation faster than the court system," said Dr. Williams.

The Doctor-Patient Alliance has concerns that the bill will unduly restrict access to the Fund based on industry-friendly exposure criteria. "The Bill provides only for those with prolonged, occupational exposure. It excludes those with neighborhood exposure, or exposure only in schools or homes or while doing 'shade tree mechanic' work. It completely knocks out the first responders to the World Trade Center collapse," said Dr. Williams.

"My family would not have been compensated under the Trust Fund, since I was exposed while doing sporadic home repairs and while working with vermiculite potting soil," noted Dr. Williams.

"The U.S. Senate should correct these serious flaws or start over," said Dr. Pass. "Our government must do better when it comes to federal compensation initiatives. Recent studies of similar programs, like the Black Lung fund, make me skeptical that the asbestos trust fund will work. The motives may have been noble, but every federal compensation program to date has been marred by much higher costs, more claims than predicted, serious delays in meeting the demand and long intervals between the date the bill became law and the day the government started writing checks."

"I have a message for Dr. Frist," said Dr. Williams. "We belong to a privileged profession. Years ago, we dedicated ourselves to healing the sick, to caring for people from all occupations. It's been said that politics is 'medicine on a grand scale.' The principles guiding patient care should inform your decisions today. Let's ban asbestos. Let's fund research on effective treatments to stave off the asbestos health crisis. But let's not bail out industry at the expense of victims. Dr. Frist, do no harm."

Cure For Mesothelioma Aided By $1 Million of Research Funding

New Research Grants Continue Progress Against Dread Cancer

Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation Announces Additional $1 Million of Research Funding

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation ("MARF") announced today awards of almost $1 million in additional research funding aimed at curing mesothelioma ("meso").  An international and cross disciplinary set of nine new projects will go forward thanks to grants from MARF of $100,000 each.  Researchers in Holland, Australia and the United States combined their efforts to field a broad spectrum of investigative efforts that are certain to advance the pace and scope of research success against this deadly cancer.  Meso is a malignant tumor related to asbestos exposure that aggressively invades the mesothelial linings of the lungs, abdomen, heart, or testicles.

MARF's scientific experts selected the nine projects as the most important and promising among 28 high caliber applications received from around the world.  For each of these two-year projects, the researchers are bound by strict budgeting and progress reporting requirements.  Funds for the first year were paid in late 2005 and the research is now underway.

In a Phase I clinical trial focused on immune therapy, Doctor B.N.M. Lambrecht of the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, plans to evaluate dendritic cells as a therapeutic adjuvant for treating malignant meso in humans.  This grant follows up on previous successes with immunotherapy studies in mice that were very effective and also funded by MARF.  Dendritic cells proved capable of generating an immune response when presenting meso tumor antigens and the current study intends to test the feasibility and safety of this approach.

Hot on the heels of meso-specific serum biomarker announcements in late 2004 and early 2005, researchers at USC under the direction of Dr. Ite Laird-Offringa were given a grant to continue investigating diagnostic markers for meso.  USC plans to use DNA microarray chips to pre-screen 6500 serum markers using the MethyLight analytical system.  Tissue samples would be examined to identify specific molecular markers found in meso tumor specimens with an eye to developing new serum tests to aid early diagnosis of the cancer.

The molecular understanding of the human genome has allowed researchers to undertake much more precise and tactical interventions against meso. Professor Xiaobo Cao of Texas A&M University, and his team, received a grant to investigate a specific gene family bcl-2, known to over-express a protein BCL-XL which blocks cell death (apoptosis) in mesothelioma tumors. Researchers wish to evaluate a bcl-2/bcl-xl antagonist, a compound that blocks the actions of the over-expressed protein, to see if it will cause tumor cell death and sensitize meso cells to the effects of existing chemotherapy agents. Such studies were virtually impossible ten years ago and represent the leading edge of scientific research today.

A Nevada Cancer Institute team under the direction of Dr. Sunil Sharma will continue its investigation of suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA), a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor.  SAHA and other HDLC inhibitors have demonstrated broad cancer activity and provide a promising new approach to therapy.  Tumor resistance to HDAC inhibitors will be studied in an effort to identify combination therapies with mTOR inhibitors and nutrient uptake inhibitors that can increase tumor response to treatment.  Dr. Sharma intends to generate a meso cell line resistant to SAHA and other drugs like valproic acid and then compare them to parent cell lines using molecular analysis to identify markers of resistance.  These markers will then become targets for therapy.

MARF funded five other, equally innovative and important studies in this latest round of grants.  Some of these research grants will become stepping stones; used to provide sufficient data to propose and win larger research grants from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and other government agencies.  Using this approach, MARF-funded projects have had a multiplier effect on the total research investment into a cure for mesothelioma.  Taken together, these studies have achieved, and will continue to achieve, results far in excess of what MARF could have accomplished alone.  Without MARF's investment, however, little progress would have taken place.

FLAVORx Seeks Everyday Child to Make Famous

Pick the Winner in a New Star Search: FLAVORx Seeks Everyday Child to Make Famous

Many child stars have arisen from everyday walks of life and stumbled upon stardom. In a nationwide search for the first annual FLAVORx SuperKid, the company looks to tap into a resource brimming over with kids with great personalities and million-dollar smiles: nominations from the American public. Similarly, to determine who appeals to the public the most, FLAVORx is opening the voting to the people. The top 20 finalists will be featured on the company website and consumers will be able to vote online for their favorite nominee and choose the winner.

Bethesda, MD (PRWEB) February 22, 2006 -- FLAVORx, Inc., the company responsible for supplying over 37,500 pharmacies nationwide with scientifically-tested and specifically developed medicinal flavorings, is looking for its newest child spokesperson. While most child stars are discovered through modeling and acting agencies, FLAVORx plans to dive into an untapped goldmine: everyday kids. Some of the most famous and talented child stars have been found by chance and stumbled into stardom. Likewise, FLAVORx turns to the American public for their nominations and votes to find a cute, funny, down-to-earth child full of personality to be the new face of FLAVORx. This FLAVORx SuperKid will win a $1,000 college scholarship fund and a roundtrip flight to Washington, D.C. for a photo shoot and be featured on marketing materials that will be displayed nationwide at its independent and chain pharmacies such as CVS, Wal-Mart and Rite-Aid.

What’s the best way to find the perfect child that appeals the most to the American public? Ask the American public for the ideal nominees, of course. Kids full of character and beaming with ear-to-ear smiles could be related to you, right next door, in your classroom, playing on the local sports team or even making you laugh in line at the grocery store. And because the American public knows who would make the absolute best FLAVORx SuperKid, the company is turning to your votes to determine the winner.

Children’s faces that have graced products such as Coppertone® Suntan Lotion and the Gerber® Baby have been made famous based on everyday kids. Coppertone was inspired by a company member’s family photo and the Gerber baby was based on the baby face of a Gerber family friend.

Ever heard of Hallie Eisenberg, the young girl who captured the nation’s heart in Pepsi commercials? Or Alyssa Milano, the child star of “Who’s the Boss?” and current successful actress on “Charmed”? Both of these young starlets accidentally found fame. Hallie Eisenberg was discovered while tagging on an interview with her older brother. Similarly, Alyssa Milano was dragged to her babysitter’s audition where the producers fell in love with Alyssa instead of her babysitter. In the case of “American Idol” or “Star Search,” these talent contests helped launch the careers of everyday people such as Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Rosie O'Donnell, Christina Aguilera, Destiny’s Child, Ray Romano, Sinbad and Martin Lawrence.

To provide opportunity and reach out to children of all backgrounds and all walks of life, FLAVORx will reach out to children’s organizations such as Make-A-Wish, Shane’s Inspiration, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Celiac Sprue Association, the Pediatric/Adolescent Gastroesophageal Reflux Association and local Children’s Hospitals and charities from now until the contest’s deadline on April 30th. Additionally, information and materials will be distributed to FLAVORx-participating pharmacies.

It is FLAVORx's intention that the $1,000 college scholarship fund will help offset the rising costs of higher education and skills training. In general, college tuition rates will increase at about twice the general inflation rate. On average, tuition tends to increase 8% per year, meaning that about every 9 years the cost of college tuition will double. Financial assistance on any level will provide great value to aspiring children and their families.

The top 20 finalists will be featured on the FLAVORx website. Voting details will follow as finalists are determined. The winner will receive a $1,000 college scholarship, a roundtrip flight to Washington, D.C. for a photo shoot and the person who nominates the winner will receive a $500 cash prize. Nomination forms are currently available online at www.flavorx.com/human/superkid.asp or through hard-copy by contacting Teresa Chen at 800.884.5771, extension 234.

Significance of Mutations in the Avian Influenza Viruses

Avian Influenza: Significance of Mutations in the H5N1 Virus

GENEVA, Feb. 21 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Several recent media reports have included speculations about the significance of mutations in H5N1 avian influenza viruses. Some reports have suggested that the likelihood of another pandemic may have increased as a result of changes in the virus.

Since 1997, when the first human infections with the H5N1 avian influenza virus were documented, the virus has undergone a number of changes.

These changes have affected patterns of virus transmission and spread among domestic and wild birds. They have not, however, had any discernible impact on the disease in humans, including its modes of transmission. Human infections remain a rare event. The virus does not spread easily from birds to humans or readily from person to person.

Influenza viruses are inherently unstable. As these viruses lack a genetic proof-reading mechanism, small errors that occur when the virus copies itself go undetected and uncorrected. Specific mutations and evolution in influenza viruses cannot be predicted, making it difficult if not impossible to know if or when a virus such as H5N1 might acquire the properties needed to spread easily and sustainably among humans. This difficulty is increased by the present lack of understanding concerning which specific mutations would lead to increased transmissibility of the virus among humans.

Animal viruses

Virtually all the known subtypes of influenza A viruses circulate in some wild birds, most notably wild waterfowl. In these birds, different viruses constantly mingle with each other and frequently exchange genetic material, resulting in a huge pool of constantly changing viruses. Mutations and reassortment events are commonly observed in the affected bird populations.

In animals, some recent evolutionary changes in the H5N1 virus appear to have made control efforts more difficult and further international spread of the virus in birds more likely. Such changes are fully understandable, particularly in view of the exceptionally large number of birds that have been infected with the H5N1 virus and the frequent interactions between infected free-ranging poultry and wild waterfowl.

Studies have shown that H5N1 viruses from the current outbreaks, when compared with viruses from 1997 and 2003, have become progressively more lethal in experimentally infected chickens and mice, and are also hardier, surviving several days longer in the environment. Other studies have shown that the virus is not yet fully adapted to poultry and is continuing to evolve.

Domestic ducks have acquired an ability to resist the disease caused by some strains, and are now capable of excreting large quantities of highly pathogenic virus without showing the warning signs of illness. In endemic countries, this altered role of domestic ducks is now thought to contribute to perpetuation of the transmission cycle. Research conducted in South-east Asia has recently shown that multiple distinct lineages of H5N1 virus have become established in poultry in different geographical regions, indicating the long- term endemicity of the virus in parts of Asia. That research also detected highly pathogenic H5N1 virus in apparently healthy migratory birds.

In birds, one important recent finding has been the remarkable similarity of viruses from recent outbreaks to those isolated from migratory birds that began dying at the Qinghai Lake nature reserve in central China in late April 2005. Evidence is mounting that this event, which resulted in the deaths of more than 6,000 wild birds, signalled an important change in the way the virus interacts with its natural reservoir host.

Unlike the case with mutations of human viruses (some of which have been transient), it appears that some changes have become fixed in viruses circulating in at least some species of wild birds.

Prior to the Qinghai Lake event, the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus was known to cause occasional sporadic deaths in migratory waterfowl, but not to kill them in large numbers or be carried by them over long distances.

Viruses from Qinghai Lake showed a distinctive mutation at one site experimentally associated with greater lethality in birds and mice. Viruses from the most recent outbreaks, in Nigeria, Iraq, and Turkey, as well as from earlier outbreaks in Russia, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia, are virtually identical to Qinghai Lake viruses.

It is considered unusual for an avian influenza virus causing outbreaks in birds to remain this genetically stable over so many months. This finding raises the possibility that the virus -- in its highly pathogenic form -- has now adapted to at least some species of migratory waterfowl and is co-existing with these birds in evolutionary equilibrium, causing no apparent harm, and travelling with these birds along their migratory routes.

If further research verifies this hypothesis, re-introduction of the virus or spread to new geographical areas can be anticipated when migratory birds begin returning to their breeding areas.

The recent appearance of the virus in birds in a rapidly growing number of countries is of public health concern, as it expands opportunities for human exposures and infections to occur. These opportunities increase when the virus spreads from wild to domestic birds, especially when these birds are kept as backyard flocks in close proximity to humans.

To date, no human cases have been linked to exposure to wild birds. Close contact with infected poultry and other domestic birds remains the most important source of human infections.

Human viruses

Some mutations have been detected in human viruses isolated in 2005 and, most recently, in one virus isolated from a fatal case in the January 2006 outbreak in Turkey. Although these mutations were found at the receptor- binding site and involved the substitution of more mammalian-like amino acids, the effect of these changes on transmissibility of the virus, either from birds to humans or from one person to another, is not fully understood. Moreover, recent studies show that these mutations were transient and did not become fixed in the circulating viruses.

Scientists do not presently know which specific mutations are needed to make the H5N1 virus easily and sustainably transmissible among humans. For example, it is not known whether the absence of a specific receptor in humans for this purely avian virus is responsible for the present lack of efficient human-to-human transmission. For this reason, virological evidence of mutational changes must be assessed together with epidemiological information about transmission patterns actually occurring in human populations. This necessity further underscores the importance of close surveillance and thorough investigation during every outbreak involving human cases.

Assessments of the outbreak in Turkey, conducted by WHO investigative teams, have produced no convincing evidence that mutations have altered the epidemiology of the disease in humans, which was similar to the pattern consistently seen in affected parts of Asia. There is no evidence, at present, from any outbreak site that the virus has increased its ability to spread easily from one person to another.

Web Site provides Information On Asbestos Litigation Headed to the Senate

Bill S.852 - the Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act of 2005 is facing several obstacles in Capitol Hill this coming week.

(I-Newswire) - Bill S.852 - the Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act of 2005 is being positioned by lobbyists as the answer to the legal quagmire regarding Mesothelioma litigation. Limited exposure to airborne asbestos fibers can lead to contraction of Mesothelioma.

Supporters of the bill propose to set up a $140 billion dollar asbestos compensation fund, but it is doubtful if even an all out effort this week will bring the bill to a vote on the floor of the US Senate.

Government intervention is the concern voiced across the nation by potential victims of this deadly disease. If the fund were to liquidate over time all potential damages would be in question. What rights would victims have in a legal setting to seek compensation from the offending companies?

That said, mesothelioma-attorney-case.com identifies with those opposed to the passage of Bill S.852 - the Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act of 2005.

Individuals concerned about their risks of legal passage of Bill S.852 can use the www.mesothelioma-attorney-case.com legal Information page ( http://www.mesothelioma-attorney-case.com/legalissues.html )  to better understand the ramifications of the legal act.  To gain more knowledge regarding the use of asbestos and the contraction of the disease see our research of Asbestos page ( http://www.mesothelioma-attorney-case.com/research.html ).  On this page mesothelioma-attorney-case.com explains the symptom. Diagnosis along with epidemiology issues regarding contracting Mesothelioma.

In addition, mesothelioma-attorney-case.com explains the treatment options available to those who have contracted the disease, as well as how friends and family can help support the fight against Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Outcome Improved With Early Chemotherapy

Early Chemotherapy Improves Outcomes for Mesothelioma

According to a recent article published in the Annals of Oncology, immediate treatment with chemotherapy improves survival rates at one year and provides improved quality of life compared to administering chemotherapy once symptoms occur in patients with malignant mesothelioma.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare cancer that develops in the tissue that covers the lungs and lines the interior of the chest. The majority of individuals who develop malignant pleural mesothelioma have a history of chronic exposure to asbestos.

The only curative treatment for mesothelioma is surgery. However, more than 70% of patients diagnosed with mesothelioma have advanced disease, which places them beyond the curative benefits of surgery. These patients are treated with chemotherapy following surgery with the main goal of treatment being to extend survival time and improve quality of life.

Researchers from England recently conducted a clinical trial to evaluate different timing of the administration of chemotherapy in patients with malignant mesothelioma. This trial included 43 patients who had undergone surgery and had stable disease symptoms for at least 4 weeks. Approximately half of the patients then received immediate chemotherapy consisting of the regimen referred to as MVP (mitomycin, vinblastine, cisplatin, or carboplatin), while the other half did not receive MVP until disease symptoms occurred.

Overall, patients treated with early chemotherapy had improved outcomes:

  • Median survival was 14 months for patients treated with immediate chemotherapy, compared with 10 months for those treated with delayed chemotherapy.
  • At one year, survival rates were 66% for those treated with immediate chemotherapy, compared with 36% for those treated with delayed chemotherapy.
  • Quality of life was generally better among patients treated with early chemotherapy.
  • Health resource utilization was comparable between the two groups of patients.

The researchers concluded that chemotherapy prior to the onset of disease symptoms improves outcomes compared to administering chemotherapy once symptoms have occurred in patients with mesothelioma. Patients with mesothelioma may wish to speak with their physician regarding their individual risks and benefits of chemotherapy timing.

Organics Get Praise From Chemotherapy Patients

Chemotherapy Patients Praise Organics

A fragrance-free Organic lotion for sensitive skin is quickly becoming the product of choice for many cancer patients suffering side effects from chemotherapy.

(PRWEB) February 16, 2006 -- A fragrance-free Organic lotion for sensitive skin is quickly becoming the product of choice for many cancer patients suffering side effects from chemotherapy.

Recently, when cancer patient Kristina Jones was searching for a lotion to soothe the burning, itching sensation in her face and upper body (a common side effect of chemotherapy), she turned to her neighbor and friend Kim Cabot, owner of BONICCA Natural Body Care. Kim gave her some Unscented Bonicca Organic Spa Lotion, knowing that the high organic aloe content and all natural ingredients would be gentle to Kristina’s irritated skin. “The itching and burning were relieved immediately,” reported Jones, “and the chapping, redness and swelling subsided in just a few hours. I feel like a new person!”

Bonicca President Kim Cabot states, “We are working hard to create the highest quality organic products” and we are offering samples of this remarkable product to Cancer clinics across the country. More information is available at www.bonicca.com

WHY ORGANIC: When products are applied directly to the body, up to 60% of the compounds in the product are absorbed into the skin, including any toxic ingredients. This is the primary concern with toxic cosmetic ingredients. Lotions, creams and oils affect the skin’s appearance precisely because they are being absorbed. While looking your best is the reason many people use cosmetics, the ill effects of toxic ingredients is alarming, and is of even greater concern for people whose immunities are weakened by illness or medication.

CHOOSE ORGANIC PRODUCTS CAREFULLY: According to a 2006 Consumer Report about buying organic cosmetic products, many body lotions and shampoos that carry the organic label use an indiscriminate amount of synthetic ingredients. “Many ingredients in personal care products didn’t grow out of the ground but in test tubes – they’re chemicals,” says Lauren Sucher, director of public affairs at the EWG (Environmental Work Group (
www.ewg.org). Just because a product has the word “organic” or “natural in its name doesn’t necessary mean it’s safer”.

A few of the potentially toxic chemicals found in personal care products are:

Phthalates: An industrial chemical very commonly found in consumer cosmetics. Linked to lung, liver and kidney damage and birth defects in the male reproductive system. A recent study by the EWG tested 72 name brand, off the shelf beauty products for the presence of phthalates. The lab found phthalates in 52 of the 72 products tested (72%) although only one listed phthalates on the label.

Parabens: The most commonly used preservatives in consumer cosmetics. Parabens (usually listed by one of their compound names, such as methylparaben, propylparaben, etc.) readily penetrate the skin and, according to the Women’s Environmental Network (WEN), research indicates that they can act as estrogen mimics, disrupting normal biological and reproductive functions. Numerous studies have also linked parabens to breast cancer, prompting the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (www.safecosmetics.org) to request that cosmetic manufacturers voluntarily discontinue the use of these preservatives.

Ultrafine Particles (UFPs): Found in a number of newer cosmetics, including some sunscreen preparations which incorporate nanoparticle titanium dioxide. These UFPs have demonstrated toxicity and according to Dr. Vyvyan Howard, a toxicologist at Liverpool University, can enter the lymphatic system via the skin.

MORE ABOUT BONICCA Skin Care Products:

Bonicca currently offers three signature products (Lotion, Shower Gel, and Bath Salts) in nine fragrances as well as unscented / fragrance-free. The Lotion and Shower Gel both contain slightly over 70% organic ingredients, with the remainder of the base ingredients made up of all natural and non toxic ingredients. The Bath Salts are also all natural. In keeping with the highest standards for the industry, Bonicca does not count water or water-based ingredients when calculating the organic percentage. The base for all of their lotions and gels is certified organic aloe vera juice (rather than the traditional water or flower water), which makes for a richer and more penetrative and effective product. All products are paraben and sulfate free. Bonicca products are certified animal cruelty free by the Coalition for Consumer Information in Cosmetics, and the company is a member of the Organic Trade Association. Bonicca is also one of fewer than 200 companies nationwide to sign the Breast Cancer Fund’s Compact for Safe Cosmetics committing to the highest standards of product safety and purity.

Fighting Infection And Boosting Your Immune System

The Immunity Defense: Fighting Infection And Boosting Your Immune System

A recent survey suggests that 34 percent of Americans either don’t know about immune system health or don’t think about it. Whether it’s an intestinal bug, the common cold, or a more serious chronic disease resulting from infection, the truth is, the best way to stay healthy is to be healthy.

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) February 14, 2006 –- Jigsaw Health, the leading Internet resource for those with chronic health conditions, announces the availability of the Immune Bundle and the Extra-Strength Immune Bundle to help boost the immune system and fight infection.

Acute infections are all too common with symptoms such as body aches, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and more. Intense but short-lived, acute infections stay just long enough to cause misery.

Chronic infections, on the other hand, last a long time with continuing and recurring symptoms that are often difficult to identify and treat. Left undiagnosed and untreated, chronic infections can severely and negatively impact your health for years to come.

A 2004 Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates’ survey of 1,000 American consumers showed that 34 percent don’t know about or think of their immune systems at all, while just 2 percent think about their immune health on a daily basis. Given these findings, and modern lifestyles, it’s easy to see how the immune system can become compromised and allow infections to take hold.

Illness.
While the immune system is busy fighting one infection, it’s vulnerable to attack by even more infectious germs.

Unhealthy diet and/or obesity.
Excessively eating highly processed foods and drinking alcohol causes nutritional deficiencies that can severely compromise the immune system.

Stress.
When the body senses stress, the immune system shuts down and the adrenal glands kick in to release cortisol as a way of coping with stress. Repeated or chronic stress keeps the body in this “fight or flight” mode—and suppresses the immune system leaving it unable to fight additional infections.

Antibiotics.
While antibiotics may help bacterial infections, many antibiotics—especially broad-spectrum antibiotics—kill not only the offending bacteria, but ALL bacteria including the good bacteria that helps fight infection. Without these healthy organisms, the body becomes vulnerable to additional infections.

Insomnia.
A deep, rejuvenating sleep allows the body to repair itself and produce hormones that help rebuild the immune system. Without sleep, the immune system is left in a weakened—and vulnerable—state.

Age.
Newborns and infants have immature immune systems that can’t fully protect them, making them more vulnerable to infection. Likewise, older adults are more susceptible to infection since the immune system declines with age.

Environmental toxins.
Mercury and other heavy metals from dental fillings, vaccinations, fish, industrial processes, and the environment—and the chemical additives, preservatives, pesticides, and herbicides often found in the food supply—can weaken the immune systems and open the door to infections.

Transfusions and transplants.
Sometimes the body will react negatively to new blood or organs and cause the immune system to shut down.

Medical therapies.
Many intensive drug therapies like chemotherapy not only kill damaged cells but healthy cells, too—and increase the risk for developing other illnesses.

Most healthcare professionals agree that a healthy lifestyle promotes a healthy immune system—and keeps infections at bay.

To help keep the immune system healthy, Jigsaw Health offers the Immune Bundle complete with powerful immune-boosting herbals such as thyme, bee propolis, cinnamon extract, cloves, fennel seed extract, oregano, holy basil, black walnut hulls extract, olive leaf extract, and Sovereign Silver™.

The Extra-Strength Immune Bundle adds neem, goldenseal, turmeric, mint leaves, ginger root, garlic, grapefruit seed extract, coriander, powerful antioxidants, and colostrum.

“Eating right, exercising, and getting sleep are all lifestyle choices that can help you fight illness,” says Patrick Sullivan, Jr. president of Jigsaw Health. “But why not bump up your immune system to help fight infection even when you’re not eating right and exercising?”

Jigsaw Health is the leading Internet resource for those with chronic conditions. Founded in 2004 by Pat Sullivan—who chronicled his own 30-year struggle with chronic conditions in his book Wellness Piece by Piece—Jigsaw Health offers balanced, well-researched health information as well as premium nutritional foods and supplements. Sullivan is widely recognized as a long-time high-tech pioneer and visionary who created ACT!®, the best-selling contact manager, and SalesLogix, a customer relationship management solution.

Seizures of Canadian Drugs Endangering Patients

FDA Seizures of Canadian Drugs Unnecessarily Endangering U.S. Patients

Recent interdictions of Canadian drug packages by U.S. Customs agents are part of a calculated campaign to intimidate patients who order life-saving medications from licensed online Canadian Pharmacies. Interruptions in established medical therapy are putting patients at unnecessary risk.

Calgary, Canada (PRWEB) February 13, 2006 -- The U.S. FDA has been ramping-up interdictions of Canadian drug packages in what appears to be an intentional intimidation campaign timed to coincide with the launch of the controversial Medicare Part D prescription drug program. Seizure rates at major border entry points have increased nearly ten-fold since December and are accompanied by a letter that obviously intends to frighten patients. Licensed and legitimate online Canadian pharmacies like Minit Drugs (www.pharmacy-online.ca) are reporting hundreds of seizures in the last 2 months, up substantially from previous averages.

“We have historically been prepared to absorb the cost of re-shipping seized medications as a necessary business expense. But now, the FDA is on a rampage to snuff-out even legitimate online pharmacies because they pose an obvious threat to the struggling Medicare drug program,” says Barney Britton, CEO of Minit Drugs (www.pharmacy-online.ca). “Clearly the FDA is acting on a political agenda.”

Evidence that recent seizures are part of a deliberate “operation” is substantiated by Mark Conrad, a retired U.S. Customs special agent, after he was contacted by an anonymous whistleblower in Miami alerting him than an intentional seizure program was underway. Officials from Customs and Border Protection’s public affairs office in South Florida did not return a phone call seeking comment on the operation.

The Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA), a trade group in which Minit Drugs is a member in-good-standing, fears that U.S. patients could be unduly harmed as a result of the FDA’s political tactics. "It's an issue of patient safety," says Andy Troszok, CIPA President. "We're not talking about Viagra and narcotics abuse. We are talking about people with breast cancer, heart disease and diabetes on established medication. Who is going to be liable for these people going off medical regimens and suffering or even dying?"

As a safe and reputable pharmacy in Canada that sustains thousands of U.S. patients on prescribed therapies, Minit Drugs calls on the FDA and Customs officials to verify Canadian licensure as a means of differentiating credible online pharmacies from potentially illegitimate ones. “If protecting the health of U.S. citizens is a priority then they should reconsider their actions. If your enforcement is doing more harm than good, it’s time to look at your policies,” adds Britton.

Minit Drugs is a licensed pharmacy located in Calgary, Alberta (AB License # 1657), is CIPA certified and IMPAC accredited. All Canadian drugs are approved by Health Canada and dispensed by licensed pharmacists.

Nationwide Climbing Event to Fight Cancer

Children and Cancer Survivor to Lead Teams In Nationwide Climbing Event to Fight Cancer

The Climb For Cancer Foundation announces two children and a cancer survivor have volunteered to be team leaders for their first annual nationwide mountain climbing event to fight cancer. The event, known as “50-50-1” will include climbing teams in all 50 states in the US, scaling the highest peak in each state on the same day. “50-50-1” stands for 50 states, 50 peaks, one goal.

Gainesville, FL (PRWEB) February 13, 2006 -- The Climb For Cancer Foundation announces two children and a cancer survivor have volunteered to be team leaders for their first annual nationwide mountain climbing event to fight cancer.

Charlie Marr, 12, and Isabelle Richmond, 13, have signed on to lead teams in Maine and Illinois respectively, to climb the highest peak in their home states. Cancer survivor, Bob Mayer will be leading the Maryland climbing squad, as several other survivors of the disease have signed up as team members in various states.

The event, known as “50-50-1” will include climbing teams in all 50 states in the US, scaling the highest peak in each state on the same day. Each team will raise $5,000, which will in turn help to fund important research to find a cure for cancer, provide patient support services, and give a child with cancer the opportunity to attend Camp Sunshine. “50-50-1” stands for 50 states, 50 peaks, one goal.

“It will give a chance to kids with cancer to go to camp, play sports and have fun just like I do,” says Marr of “50-50-1”. “I hope someday that all kids with cancer are healthy enough to climb the highest peak in their state. Most importantly, I want kids with cancer to know everyone cares about people with the disease and this foundation shows that.”

Isabelle Richmond added, "I would like to do something for children with cancer. My Grandmother died of cancer, so I would like to help raise money for cancer research."

The Climb For Cancer Foundation was started by Ron and Dianne Farb to combine Ron's love for mountain climbing with their desire to see an end to cancer. The Foundation acquires sponsors and donations in support of Ron's mountain climbing expeditions, and then uses the money raised to help fund cancer research and support services.
